Explaining Autism

"The Little Composer" by Amelia Bennett

#040,  $11.95

Made in the USA

The Little ComposerHow do you go about explaining autism to others?

The perfect starting point - The Little Composer can help you to begin the task of explaining autism to children, teachers, relatives, neighbors or anyone else.

Who should own this book -

  • Pediatricians
  • Neurologists and other specialists who deal with autism
  • School teachers
  • School librarians
  • Parents
  • Grandparents and other relatives
  • Daycare providers
  • Church groups, including religious education classrooms

And why - Written by 16 year old Amelia Bennett, The Little Composer shows how a person can experience our world in a completely different way than we do, providing an opportunity to begin explaining autism from a perspective that anyone can understand.

With her wonderful illustrations and delightful writing style, Miss Bennett brings to life the story of The Little Composer, who experiences the world through music.

A great bedtime book for the little ones - At only 28 pages long, The Little Composer will keep the attention of the smallest child. Its eight and a half by eleven inch size shows the full color, glossy illustrations to their best advantage.

The Little Composer, insideA different perspective - From the sounds of nature to the voices of his family, this young man who loves music hears everything around him as if it's part of a musical arrangement.

But while he thoroughly loves this "music", his unusual way of experiencing the world does not help him to understand it very well!

Travel along with The Little Composer as he discovers that there are other types of "music" in the world. You'll love the absolute joyousness that runs rampant throughout this book, while you'll cheer for The Little Composer in his efforts to understand.

A great way to explain autism - Have you ever tried explaining your child's autism to someone who has no experience with it? Have you had other children (even your own) ask what "autism" means, or why your child behaves the way they do?

Do you remember - How hard it was for you to understand this mystery when your child was first diagnosed, or how hard its been for YOU as a parent, a doctor, a teacher, etc. to explain why a child is "different"?

I remember - So clearly how, when Lucas was first diagnosed, I read book after book, trying to find SOMETHING I could use to explain autism to his grandparents, to his brother, and even to help explain autism to the teachers at his "non-categorical" pre-school class, who didn't have much experience with it at the time.

I would highlight one paragraph out of one book, and another from another book, etc., then try to explain autism by refering to various paragraphs in a half a dozen books!

I wish - The Little Composer had been around back then. Lucas' doctors could have used it to explain autism to us, and I could have given it to everyone, from grandparents to Lucas' brother, to open up the discussion and help them to understand our child's autism.

Other ways to explain autism - Don't forget that our original Autism Awareness Bracelet and other items explain how to help those with autism.

Made by those with autism - Every LucasWorks Autism Awareness Bracelet, Keychain/Purse Charm, Bookmark, Autism Lanyard, and even our Fragile X Syndrome bracelet is handmade by someone with autism, and comes with a card showing how its beads and charms teach how to help people with autism.
